Four formats under one word
Conference covers several things here, and which one you are looking at decides who you will be sitting next to.
Screened forums control the balance of the room: qualifying families attend free, anyone with something to sell pays, and provider places are capped. Open industry conferences publish no eligibility test and no cap, so the room is wider and you cannot assume the person beside you is another principal. Allocator meetings put fund managers in front of the people who choose funds, which is efficient if you are deploying capital and beside the point if you want to discuss governance. Executive education is a different proposition again: a multi-day programme with a curriculum, faculty and a small group you will know properly by the end.
Most of these split the room and price the two halves differently, with investors attending free and the firms hoping to reach them paying. Each listing sets out which format it is and what it costs where the organiser publishes a figure.
