- Annual three-day West Coast conference; one of two US editions, now in its 23rd year.
Institutional Investor has run its Family Office Wealth Conference for more than twenty years, making it one of the oldest events of its kind in the United States. It now runs two editions a year, one on each coast. The West Coast edition takes place over three days at the Montage in Laguna Beach.
Institutional Investor is a research and events business serving the institutional allocator world, and that background shows in the programme. The conference treats a family office as a serious allocator rather than as a private client.
Who attends
The audience is single family office leaders and investment professionals, with a smaller group of invited investment partners. The advisory board that shapes the agenda is drawn from family offices themselves and has run to nearly thirty chief investment officers, managing partners and investment directors from across North America.
That advisory board is the most useful signal about the event. A programme set by working family office CIOs answers different questions from one set by a sponsorship team, and it is a reasonable proxy for the seniority of the room.
How access works
Registration goes through a form on the organiser's site, which asks for name, company and job title, and the organiser reviews it. There is no public application threshold or asset minimum stated, and no invitation code is required to submit the form.
Institutional Investor publishes no price for the conference. Attendance terms come at the registration stage. Anyone attending on the commercial side should assume separate partner arrangements rather than an open ticket, since the audience is the product for an event of this kind.
What attendees get
Three days of thought leadership from investment specialists, academics, strategists and family office chief investment officers, structured around small group discussions and breakout conversations rather than large plenary sessions alone. The organiser puts networking on the same footing as the programme.
The resort setting and the three-day length are deliberate. A conference that keeps people in one place for three days produces conversations that a one-day event in a city centre does not, and the small-group format is built to use that time.
For a family office on the West Coast with investment staff, the combination of longevity, a peer-set agenda and an institutional lens on the content makes this one of the stronger options in the region. The East Coast edition follows the same model for offices closer to New York.
