Four kinds of body

Associations look alike from the outside and do different jobs. National family office bodiesrepresent the sector inside one country’s rules, working on standards, training and policy. Family business associations address the operating company rather than the portfolio, and argue the ownership case with governments on questions such as inheritance tax and business transfer. Credentialing bodies certify the advisers rather than serving families directly. Institutes sell education and research rather than representation.

What a credential is worth

Family office work is unregulated almost everywhere, so certificates fill the gap and they are not equal. A few carry statutory recognition or were built with a financial regulator; others require examinations or documented senior experience; others again are private badges issued by the body that invented them. None of the schemes recognises the others. The useful question is not whether someone holds a certificate but who issued it, what it required, and whether anyone outside that organisation recognises it. Each listing says which kind it is.
