The Swiss Single Family Office Association calls itself the official association for Swiss single family offices. Its eligibility rule is refreshingly simple: single family offices of any size with a representation in Switzerland.

Who joins

Two things stand out in that rule. The first is what it excludes. This is a single family office body, not a private wealth industry association, so the multi-family offices, private banks and advisory firms that dominate most Swiss wealth organisations are not the membership.

The second is what it does not exclude. Size is explicitly not a barrier. Many organisations in this directory set a floor, sometimes several hundred million, which leaves smaller offices with nowhere to go. SFOA takes any single family office with a Swiss presence, which makes it one of the more accessible bodies here for a modest office.

The Swiss presence requirement is a location test rather than a nationality one. A family based elsewhere with a Swiss office qualifies.

How membership works

Membership is by application, and the association does not publish dues, so terms come on enquiry.

What members get

Four things, and the first is unusual for a national association.

SFOA runs a leadership development and certification programme for family officers, explicitly aimed at creating industry standards for single family offices. Family office work has no formal qualification anywhere, so a national body issuing one addresses a real gap: it gives an office a way to develop staff and a way to judge people it hires.

Best practice workshops and peer exchange form the second strand, and the third is the member events themselves, run as full days at various Swiss locations several times through the year. Several full-day meetings a year is a meaningful cadence, well above the single annual conference most national associations manage.

The fourth is representation. SFOA lobbies for policy favourable to the sector, which matters more in Switzerland than the phrase suggests. Swiss rules on financial services licensing, tax and residence all bear on how a family office can be structured, and an association speaking for single family offices specifically is a different voice from one speaking for banks.

For a family office with a Swiss footprint, this is the natural national membership, and the certification programme is the part most likely to justify it on its own.
