The American Family Office Association describes itself as the premier membership organisation for family offices and wealthy families across the United States, working on protecting wealth, investing strategically and creating lasting impact. It operates from Detroit and runs its programme across major American cities.

Who joins

Membership is open to single family offices, multi-family offices and high-net-worth families seeking resources, networking and guidance. That is a broad definition, and deliberately so: this is a general association rather than a screened peer group.

Two implications follow. Multi-family offices are businesses serving many client families, so admitting them alongside families means the room is mixed by design. And with no asset threshold published, the range of member size is unknown from the outside.

For a family office, that breadth cuts both ways. There is no barrier to entry, which suits an office that is newly formed or modest in scale and would not qualify elsewhere. But you cannot infer from membership who else will be present, which the screened bodies in this directory allow you to do.

How membership works

Membership is by application, and the association publishes no dues, no membership categories and no member numbers.

That is worth naming plainly, because it is unusual for a body positioning itself as a national association. Its European counterparts in France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland each publish more about their structure and purpose than AFOA does about its own. Anyone considering joining should treat the first conversation as the real research and ask directly: how many members, of what type, what does it cost, and who attends the events.

What members get

Four strands. Education through workshops and webinars. Networking through private events and roundtables. Resources including templates and access to advisers. And regional engagement across major cities, which for a country the size of the United States is the part that determines whether membership is usable at all.

The regional structure is the strongest feature. American family office activity concentrates heavily in New York, Chicago, Dallas, Miami and the West Coast, and much of the national circuit expects you to travel. A body organising in several cities lets an office take part without booking flights.

For a US family office, the honest position is that this is one option among several stronger-documented ones in this directory. Family Office Exchange, The Family Office Association and TIGER 21 all publish more about who they admit and what they provide. AFOA's advantage is accessibility. Judge it on the answers you get when you ask.
