The Institute for Family Governance exists to help families build governance that lasts. Its stated method is straightforward: open discussion, collaboration across disciplines, and the exchange of practical know-how. It was founded and is chaired by Babetta von Albertini, with vice-chairs including Dennis T. Jaffe, John E. Oden and David R. York, names well established in the family governance field.
Who attends
The rooms mix family business leaders, trusted advisers, academics and family members across generations, with the institute noting attendance spanning the second generation through to the seventh.
That generational range is the distinguishing feature. Most events in this directory attract either the generation currently in charge or the one waiting, and rarely both. A conference where a seventh-generation family member and a second-generation one are both present offers something a peer group of exact contemporaries cannot: evidence of what actually survives.
Governance professionals and advisers are part of the audience by design, so this is not a principals-only setting.
How access works
Two routes, and this is one of the few organisations in this category to publish a price for either.
You can attend a conference without joining, paying per event. Or you can take annual membership at $250, which carries additional benefits through the year.
At that level the membership is close to a formality rather than a barrier, and it sits far below the several thousand a year that comparable bodies charge. For anyone who expects to attend more than one conference, or who wants the material between them, it is an easy decision.
What attendees get
Three annual conferences, each anchored in a different market: New York in the spring, London in the autumn and Miami in December. Running the same institute across both sides of the Atlantic means the governance discussion is not confined to one legal tradition, which matters because trust structures, forced heirship and tax treatment differ so sharply between them.
Next generation programming runs alongside the main conferences, covering leadership development, how to engage rising family members and how succession is actually handled.
The institute is narrower than most bodies in this directory, and that is its strength. It does not attempt to cover investment, operations or jurisdiction selection. It concentrates on governance, meaning how a family makes decisions together and how that survives the people who set it up. For a family confronting that question, a focused conference with a published $250 membership is an unusually low-risk place to start.
