The Private Wealth Management Association was established in Hong Kong in 2013 as the industry body for private wealth management, with a mission to foster the growth and development of the sector in the territory.
Who joins
The badge on this listing is important here. PWMA is a body for institutions, not for families. Full members are authorised institutions and licensed corporations in Hong Kong running dedicated private wealth management businesses providing personalised banking, with an associate category alongside them.
In plain terms, the membership is the private banks and licensed wealth managers. A family office cannot join as a family, and would not want to.
The reason it appears in this directory is different. PWMA co-organises the Family Office Symposium held alongside the Asian Financial Forum, and it produces the industry research that shapes how Hong Kong positions itself for family office business. Its work affects families even though its membership does not include them.
How membership works
Membership is corporate and PWMA does not publish its fee schedule. Categories vary and terms come on application.
What members get
The most substantial part of PWMA's work is professional certification, and it carries genuine regulatory weight. The association administers the Enhanced Competency Framework for private wealth management, with the CPWP and CPWPA designations attached to it. The framework was developed by a task force chaired by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, and PWMA co-organises an apprenticeship programme with the same regulator.
That relationship is what distinguishes PWMA from a commercial network. When an industry association builds its competency standard jointly with the central bank, the qualification means something to employers and to the regulator, rather than being a private badge.
Beyond certification sit industry forums, surveys and the family office symposium.
For a family office in Hong Kong, the practical uses are indirect but real. The CPWP designation is a way to check the training of private bankers you deal with. The association's surveys are among the better public sources on how the territory's private wealth industry is developing. And the symposium is one of the few places where the industry, the regulator-adjacent association and government promotion bodies appear together.
Families looking for a Hong Kong body they can actually join should look instead at the Family Office Association Hong Kong, the independent trade association, or at the government's FamilyOfficeHK team.
