The Malaysian Business Angel Network describes itself as the official trade association and governing body for angel investors and angel clubs in Malaysia. It is formally registered under the country's Societies Act, which is worth noting because the role it plays is genuinely quasi-official rather than self-declared.

Who joins

Three membership categories: angel investor membership, corporate innovation membership, and investee company membership.

That third category is unusual and reveals what MBAN is. Most bodies in this directory admit only people with capital. Including the companies receiving investment makes MBAN an ecosystem body for Malaysian early-stage finance as a whole rather than an investors' club.

How membership works

Membership and accreditation run through MBAN's own process. Fees are not published for any category, so both the accreditation requirements and the cost come from the association directly.

The accreditation is the substantial part, and it is the reason a Malaysian investor deals with MBAN at all. The association administers the Angel Tax Incentive Programme, under which an accredited angel investing in an eligible company can claim a tax benefit of up to RM500,000. Accreditation by MBAN is the gateway to that relief.

Very few organisations in this directory hold that kind of role. Most peer networks and angel groups offer access and education. MBAN controls entry to a government tax incentive, which makes membership a practical necessity for a Malaysian angel rather than a discretionary purchase.

What members get

Investor education, ecosystem programmes, and pitch events run under the name Enter the Tigers' Lair, where companies present to the investor community.

For a family office with Malaysian interests, the calculation is simple. If family members are investing personally in Malaysian early-stage companies, MBAN accreditation is what unlocks the tax relief, and the value of that relief will dwarf any membership fee. If your exposure to Malaysia is through funds rather than direct angel investment, the association is less relevant and the regional networks in Singapore will give broader deal flow.

Confirm the current terms of the tax incentive with MBAN or a Malaysian tax adviser before relying on it. Government incentive schemes are periodically revised, and the figure above reflects what the association publishes rather than independent verification of the current rules.
