The Alternative Board helps private business owners grow their businesses and improve their lives through local advisory boards, one-to-one coaching and a set of strategic tools. It operates in more than 25 countries across the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australasia.

It sits in the broader section of this directory because its members are owners of small and mid-sized private companies rather than family offices, though a good number of family offices began as exactly that.

Who joins

Owners and leadership teams of privately held businesses. TAB does not publish a revenue threshold, which places it lower down the scale than Vistage or YPO and makes it accessible to owners those organisations would not admit.

How membership works

Membership is arranged locally, and this is the structural fact that matters most: TAB runs on a franchise model, so the person selling you membership owns the local operation.

That has real consequences. Pricing is set locally and varies, so no national figure means anything. More importantly, quality varies with the individual franchisee, who both facilitates your board and coaches you. A strong local operator delivers something genuinely valuable; a weak one does not, and the brand cannot tell you which you are getting.

TAB publishes no fees, and figures quoted elsewhere are unreliable for the same reason. Meet the local franchisee, ask to observe a board meeting if possible, and judge that person rather than the organisation.

What members get

Three components. A monthly local advisory board of non-competing owners who work through each other's decisions. Private coaching between meetings. And a set of proprietary strategic planning tools the organisation applies to members' businesses.

The combination of board plus coaching is the same shape Vistage uses, at a smaller company scale and through a franchise rather than a chair network.

For a family office reader, the practical relevance is narrow but real. If a family holds an operating business of modest size, perhaps one inherited and now run by a family member, this is an accessible peer structure for whoever runs it, in far more locations than the larger organisations reach. It has nothing to offer on wealth, investment or governance of the family itself, and does not claim to.
