Renaissance Executive Forums runs peer advisory boards for chief executives, describing itself as an invitation-only membership for the world's best chief executives. It operates internationally and sits in the broader section of this directory because its members are business leaders rather than family offices.
Who joins
Chief executives, admitted by invitation. The structure is precise: a trusted group of 12 non-competing chief executives who meet monthly.
Twelve is a considered number. Below about eight a group loses the range of experience that makes it useful; above about fifteen people stop speaking. Most effective peer organisations land in the same band, and REF states its figure rather than leaving it vague.
The non-competing rule is what makes candour possible. Chief executives will not discuss margins, staffing problems or an acquisition they are weighing in front of someone whose company might benefit, so a group composed across unrelated industries is the precondition for the whole format.
How membership works
By invitation, with placement into a local forum. REF publishes no fees, so cost comes through the conversation.
What members get
The monthly forum meeting is the core: a confidential session where members pressure-test the decisions they are actually facing rather than listen to a speaker.
Beyond it, REF offers one-to-one connections, curated events and access to a wider global membership, and frames the value across three dimensions: the business itself, the member's own capability at reading situations and asking better questions, and the personal side including relationships and wellbeing.
That third dimension is worth noting because it recurs across this whole category. The organisations that endure tend to be the ones that acknowledge running a company is not only a business problem, and that the person doing it has a life attached.
For a family office reader, REF is the same proposition as Vistage or The Alternative Board at a smaller and more selective scale: a peer structure for whoever in the family runs an operating company. It has nothing to say about managing a portfolio, structuring ownership or governing a family, and does not pretend otherwise. Judge it on the specific forum you would join and the people in it, since with a group of twelve those individuals are the entire product.
